A Journey Through 30 Days of Bikram Yoga

Because I didn’t have nearly enough on my plate, I decided to devote the month of February to a 30-day yoga challenge, which consists of practicing Bikram’s 90-minute moving meditation each day for 30 days in a row.

Anantasana

Translation: Ananta is the name of the thousand-headed serpent upon which legendary deity Vishnu rests at the bottom of the primordial ocean. Ananta is also a name for Vishnu himself. While he sleeps a lotus grows from his navel. In that lotus is born Brahma, the Creator of the universe. The pose imitates the stalk growing from the navel with the extended leg in that position.
 

Ardha Chandrasana

Pronunciation: (SOOP-tah BAW-dah cone-NAWS-ahna)

Translation: Supta, in Sanskrit, meants reclining. Baddha means bound and Kona is angle. Asana means pose. Therefore Supta Baddha Konasana means Reclining Bound Angle Pose.

 

Ardha Matsyendrasana

In Sanskrit, ardha means half. Matsyendra was a legendary sage in yoga called the King of the Fishes.

Translation: Sanskrit, the spiritual language of India from which yoga derives its nomenclature, translates the word “bala” to “child.” Asana, of course, means pose or posture. Thus Balasana means Child’s Pose in Sanskrit.

 

 

Bhujangasana: The Cobra Pose

n Sanskrit, bhujanga means snake or serpent thus the Cobra Pose. Asana translates to pose or posture and also seat.

 

Compassion in Yoga

This past week, I have been emphasizing "compassion" in my classes. Of course, when we think of compassion, we usually get caught in thinking of us (the fortunate) helping others (the unfortunate). In fact, when we begin to try to "help others," we soon find that compassionate action (karuna) necessitates working with ourselves
