A thousand years before the story begins Aidar had a Great War with Thargon.  It began when Thargon invaded Aidar and practically conquered it.  The king barely escaped Geir'Aidar with his life.  He fled north to what became Ithmacar.  The people there were very primitive, but friendly, and they welcomed the king as their leader.  He led the Ithmacarians for a few years, but his heart longed to liberate his people, suffering under the Thargonite yoke.

Several years later, as the king was growing old, a group of wizards appeared.  They offered him a chance to regain his kingdom in return for a place to live.  The upshot of the whole war was that with the aid of the wizards, the King liberated his people, yet he was slain by a stray arrow in a minor skirmish.  His son became King of the Aidarian empire, and ruled for many years.  This new king built a fortress on the southern border of Aidar, near Thargon, and called it Syrn (Sigh-ern).  Syrn was intended to be a peacekeeper, yet within a few years of it's completion Thargon attacked it and the two empires have fought over it ever since.

A couple of important points from the war - The Celtarn were formed shortly after it ended, and the orcs are descended from Thargonite warriors who fled into the mountains during the war.
