| Someone told me this would a good place to get my feet wet, so to speak. It seems to me that a 2 days (level 1) is not enough time to be able to teach yoga. Feedback? | |||

| You may want to do a forum search on this, there has been lots of discussion in the past. General consensus from the seasoned yogis has been that a weekend workshop is not enough training to be able to teach a safe, enriching yoga class. But if it's just something you want to try to learn something new for your own practice, that is of course up to you! | |||

| I do agree with you. It is something I would like to try for personal development-not professional development! Susan | |||

| It is part of the yoga alliance and there are multiple levels. For the most part it is used to teach under an umbrella of another studio or gym. If you wish to take your teaching outside of these places you may want to do the next few levels or take multiple teacher training classes. I think if you feel you are ready to teach and there is someone wanting to learn from you then it does not matter what is on you wall. The guru said to the disciple: "You have three jobs. Your first was to find me. Your second is to love me. Your third is to leave me." -Indian proverb I think that one concept is to help make it more affordable. | |||

However, Yogafit is recognized by Yoga Alliance and if you do 200 hours of YogaFit you can get a 200hr RYT from Yoga Alliance. Yogafit is merely a registry for yoga teachers and schools and are trying to position themselves as some sort of regulatory body by creating "guidelines" for yoga teachers, but they have no official position nor do they certify teachers on their own. Having RYT status simply means that your school is recognized by them and meets their minimum "standards."

| ^^^yes, and also, you can only get your 200 hour RYT from yogafit through the end of this year. after 2005, standards change, you have to have all 200 hours under ONE teacher. | |||

It seems to me that a 2 days (level 1) is not enough time to be able to teach yoga. Feedback? you are absolutely right. the only teachers that this program seems to benefit are those teachers who have already been doing and teaching yoga for many years and they want a 'quick and easy' certification process. at this stage, you don't need to 'get your feet wet.' i think that the plan that you outlined in another post stream--doing yoga consistantly for the next year, getting a daily practice, and learning as much as you can (consider taking a yoga retreat or a yoga vacation--they are different!), and then considering teacher training is a good idea. when you're ready, there are lots of options for teacher trainings. IF you're in NYC, i know of many great programs and schools. I'm sure yogaguy does too. Things that are less expensive than yoga fit, better quality, and more centered around your interests and practices in yoga.

| Pure Yoga as in Rod Stryker's teacher training? He breaks down his Master Training Certification into 9 parts, after which you are "Pure Yoga Teacher Certified" - as far as hours go it's (as I understand it) way more than 500 hours. You can do parts of his training and register with YA at the 200 or 500 hour levels. If you want to see what's involved take a look at www.pureyoga.com/certification.htm. I've only done 1 workshop with him and all I can say is that it was frickin' mindblowing. Pablo Domene Lee http://www.pablodomenelee.com | |||

I'm going to Dharma Mittra's Yoga center on Octover 8 for the 3 hour intensive. http://www.dharmayogacenter.com

Expert Yogi Posts: 5287 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | i haven't been to kripalu for any workshops. a friend of mine recently returned from there and loved it. i have been to the Rowe Center, which is also in the berkshires, and it was lovely. i can only imagine that kripalu is nice too. one of my teachers got her certification through there, and as i said, a friend of mine took a retreat there last weekend. Everyone really enjoys it. Consider a yoga retreat weekend or workshop at Kripalu or Omega Institute. Both are great opportunities for R and R and also just getting deeper into your practice. They offer a number of retreats on a number of topics. Here's the caveat--don't take a teacher training! Take a retreat. Ok? Edited by zoebird 2005-09-29 1:43 PM
