Yoga Exercises for Beginners: Start Doing Yoga Today!

The very essence of yoga is to achieve inner peace, a clear mind and a calm heart, right? Well, what about those of us whose minds are clouded with errand running, a hectic work schedule, can’t get to the gym at 5am or make that 6:30 pm beginner vinyasa class?

Not to mention that the thought of standing next to someone whose tree pose is posture perfect and graceful, while ours needs a bit more time to ‘blossom,” can be discouraging. Leave the social pressure of yoga classes, relax, exhale, say “ahhhhhh” instead of “accckkk!” and know the solution is simple: yoga exercises

By practicing yoga exercises for beginners at home, you can get a toned, limber body and a stress-free mind without any worries about whether you’re running late for a soccer game, have to juggle your schedule for a much- needed Pedi, or simply want to catch up on your z’s, in the morning. And you don’t have to fight for a parking space or share your “personal” space with a single soul. (And you can wear whatever you want!)

For a well rounded at-home yoga routine, do at least the Sun Salutation daily, and do the full routine two to three times a week. Of course, with the myriad of fitness and health channels on television, there is bound to be at least one yoga exercises for beginners at home class.

To make it even easier, you can set your DVR to record the class you want for as long as you like, and do the class whenever you like! Or, if you prefer, the local library has many DVD’s and VCR tapes on yoga for beginners. You can also research yoga routines online, and choose one you feel is best suited for you. Remember to focus on your breathing, making certain to inhale and exhale, and pause a moment at the end of each exhale to think about the next pose. (If you’re using a tape or pre-recorded show, this will be noted.)

All of these tools are either completely free or very inexpensive, not to mention you’re not shelling out money for a new wardrobe, (which means you can afford the Pedi!) you’re saving money on gas, and you never have to leave the sanctity of your own home!

Because this is a new venture, it is important you perform the poses and postures correctly for maximum benefit and to avoid injury. So, in addition to doing yoga exercises for beginners at home, it is recommended you supplement the class with two to four yoga classes a month so a certified instructor can check your alignment. While you’re there, make mental notes about postures that make you feel especially good and add them to your home routine.

Create your own “space” by using candles, incense, and soothing music. You can find many cd’s at the library specifically for yoga, or purchase them at your local bookstore or online. (If you have cable, there are several meditative channels, “Soundscapes” is excellent.) Find some that speak to you and move you, in addition to relaxing and calming you. The whole purpose of yoga exercises for beginners at home is to make you FEEL at home, in body, mind and spirit.
