Who Should Not Perform Hot Yoga?

Hot yoga is a great way to facilitate a range of health-boosting processes in the body. It’s a great way to increase flexibility, it’s a perfect method for cleansing the whole organism and it’s a proven way of improving one’s metabolism. Needless to say that all these wonderful effects result from both exercising and the extreme heat. However, it doesn’t mean that hot yoga is a universal remedy that would suit everyone. So here’s the list of medical conditions that can be considered contraindications for doing this kind of yoga.

Pregnancy

It’s quite obvious that rigorous exercising and high temperatures (up to 100 F) can be harmful for the baby and may even result in a miscarriage. Women who used to do this form of yoga before pregnancy can still practice it, but at a much slower pace and only if their doctor doesn’t approves of it. However it’s better to consider special prenatal yoga classes, because prenatal yoga specifically caters to the needs of pregnant women.

Diabetes

People who have diabetes should also avoid this hot yoga. The heat which results in dehydration can actually be dangerous. The stress which the body will be exposed to can change the level of blood glucose dramatically and lead to a diabetes stroke.

Heart conditions

The same goes for those who have a higher risk of heat-related illnesses like heart failure. People who have heart problems are very likely to experience a heat stroke even doing simple things in extreme temperatures. Needless to say that their bodies are too weak to handle the pressure that comes with intense exercising in a hot room

Medications

People who use medications might want to contact their doctors before trying to get into this yoga. Some people who use medications to treat different conditions may be more likely to suffer from heat exhaustion. In fact, a medication may potentially cause the body to respond to hot conditions differently than others. Only a qualified doctor can tell if a condition is going to be exaggerated as a result of this form of yoga.

Sleeping disorders

Finally, those who do not sleep well or have sleeping disorders should avoid this practice. People with these conditions are often more likely to suffer from severe symptoms of certain sleeping disorders if they are not resting properly.

Hot yoga may be fantastic for some but it is not going to work well for everyone; check with your doctor before starting any kind of intense yoga program.
