Simple Yoga Routines to Begin With
Yoga does not have to be complex: There are many simple yoga routines that you can use for great physical and spiritual benefits. Finding one that works for you is a matter of determining your needs and limitations.
The first thing you will need is a quiet, comfortable place to sit and lie down. It’s best that you have a yoga mat, but any type of comfortable padding will do. Clothes should be comfortable and not inhibit movement.
Yoga is about bringing inner peace; so before beginning physical postures, begin with the Corpse Pose. Lie on your back with your hands at your side. Breathe deeply and gently. Beginning with your toes and moving to your head, visualize bringing health and calmness to all parts of your body. Still your mind and rid it of distractions and unwanted thoughts. Now calm, you are ready to perform your routine.
As you go through the postures, make sure you retain this sense of calmness. Never force yourself and always breathe gently and deeply. When you stretch in one direction, balance it with a stretch in the opposite direction.
For example, a simple yoga standing pose is the mountain pose. This is done by standing straight and tall. Visualize yourself as imposing and serene as a mountain. Maintaining gentle breathing, bend forward and hold the pose for a few moments. Bring yourself back into the Mountain pose and then slowly bend backwards, holding this for a few moments before returning to the Mountain pose. Always strive to bring this serenity to your practice.
It is important to exercise as much of your body as you can and usually even the simple yoga routine provide for that. There are many excellent books and websites you can look at to give you an idea of the variety of poses. Among those not often considered:
- Neck rolls and spinal bends are another excellent way of strengthening the back. Either standing or seated, twist your back and your head looking behind you.
- Other exercises work on the arms. Put one arm over your shoulder, the other behind your back, and try to touch fingertips.
- Balance is a key aspect of yoga: Simple exercises will help you learn to balance with the same serenity you had doing the Mountain pose.
Yoga is best performed under the guidance of a trained instructor. Don’t be put off thinking it is too difficult for you: shop around and you’ll find simple yoga routines for beginners. You may not find the ideal place on your first visit, but with a little effort you will find a studio that meets your needs.
