How to learn yoga and enjoy it

What to ask Yourself
Before entering the studio, do a self-assessment:
Have you had any injuries? No matter how old an injury may be, be sure to let your instructor know before beginning any class. Do you have any health issues? Maybe you have asthma, a subtle heart condition, anxiety, emotional trauma, et cetera. Remember that the experience of yoga is not just a physical one. Settling into poses and breathing into asanas (or poses) can trigger or bring to the surface unexpected symptoms. The best thing to do is simply prepare yourself for this possibility. It is not bad or wrong, or something to be afraid of. One of the best steps we can take towards self-awareness is to look at our pain and be aware of it, as opposed to letting it control us.
What to Wear
When attending a yoga class, it is best to keep your clothing choices light and comfortable. Most yoga students do not wear socks in an effort to achieve a better grip. Depending on your own level of comfort, the fewer clothes you wear, the better. In addition to its mental and spiritual benefits, yoga is a practice of the body. How to learn yoga is also about how to learn about your body and what it looks like in a certain pose. This will also help your instructor know what needs to be changed or adjusted. Shorts and a tight tank top are great options for your first yoga class. Opt for materials like soft cotton and hemp.
What to Bring
It’s best to purchase your own yoga mat; these are always in stock at places like sporting goods stores or boutique places like yoga studios or an REI or Patagonia. They are not very expensive and will last a lifetime. Bring two towels: one to place atop your mat and another washcloth or hand towel size to wipe off the sweat that forms during your practice. Bring a water bottle: It doesn’t need to be more than a 32 oz sized bottle. Filling up on too much water during your class will lead to an uncomfortable feeling of fullness.
What to Do
Before starting the class, arrive early and introduce yourself to your instructor. Don’t be shy because they are there to help and want you to know how to learn yoga. It’s their job. Ask them questions and let them know of your health status. Be open; the more you let them know, the more they can help you. Most importantly, don’t take yourself too seriously. Enjoy yourself and first and foremost, listen to your body.
