What is kundalini?

Kundalini is the energy that is sleeping coiled up at the base of your spine. As it is awakened with the help of special techniques, it goes up your body through all of the chakras and connects you to the universe.

What are kundalini yoga benefits?

Increased spiritual awareness. The purpose of kundalini yoga is to enhance the connection between the mind and spirit. Practice of kundalini yoga helps release mental or emotional blocks that create obstacles on the way of the energy from the root to the crown chakra.

Physical fitness. You can also increase endurance, strength and flexibility doing kundalini yoga. Regular and correct practice of kundalini yoga stimulates glands and cleanses the body.

What constitues a kundalini yoga session?

Typically a class begins with chanting a mantra, which is followed by some warm-up activities that stretch your spine and improve its flexibility. The main part is called a kriya. This is a sequence of poses and breathing exercises. A kriya may also contain mudras – hand positions, and bandhas – body locks or tightening of certain body muscles that are used to channel the energy flow. At the end of the class there is usually a meditation.

Is kundalini yoga right for me?

Go for kundalini yoga if you’re eager to try one of the more spiritual types of yoga. Although it means more than taking poses – with its emphasis on pranayama, meditation and chanting – it can still be rather challenging physically.
